What is a Chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a healthcare professional who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine, muscles, and joints. Chiropractors focus on manual adjustments and non-invasive therapies to improve alignment, relieve pain, and support the body’s natural healing processes.

What do I need to bring?

Be prepared to provide your previous medical or surgical history at your initial assessment. If you have them and if they are relevant bring scan/MRI reports and list of any medications you take. You may also wish to bring shorts and t-shirt to change into if you have come straight from work.

How many visits will I need?

The number of treatments will vary depending on the problem and individual. After your initial assessment appointment, the Chiropractor will discuss their working diagnosis with you along with the suggested treatment plan.

What should I wear to my appointment?

For your initial assessment we will perform a number of tests so may require you to wear a gown (provided) to allow us to see your skin. Therefore comfortable and modest underwear or even a pair of shorts and a t-shirt is appropriate.

For follow-up appointments you will not be asked to undress so loose fitting clothing with shorts or leggings is fine.

Do I have to be referred by a doctor?

No, Chiropractors are Primary Healthcare Professionals specialising in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions and are regulated by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) – GCC. Chiropractors can assess and treat without referral by a doctor.

However some health insurers require a doctors referral before they authorise cover of fees, so do check your policy.

What is the difference between Chiropractic, Physio & Osteopathy?

Chiropractic: Focuses on the spine, joints, and nervous system using manual adjustments and specific spinal manipulation to improve alignment and function.

Physiotherapy: Takes a broader approach to musculoskeletal issues using exercise, movement therapy i.e. stretching, and rehabilitation techniques.

Osteopathy: A whole-body approach, emphasizing how different systems (muscles, bones, circulation) interact. This approach is thought of as closer to Chiropractic treatment than Physio.

Chiropractic care is recognised to support the following conditions and symptoms:

Conditions Chiropractic Care Can Help With:

  • Back pain (upper & lower)
  • Neck pain (including whiplash)
  • Sciatica (nerve pain down the leg)

  • Poor posture & spinal misalignment
  • Repetitive strain injuries (RSI, carpal tunnel)

Yes, many patients visit to improve their range of motion, reduce stiffness or simply come on a regular basis for preventative care. Many patients also report other benefits such as a reduction in headaches or an improvement in general wellbeing.

No, Chiropractic adjustments are generally pain free. The popping sound you may hear is simply gas bubbles being formed and released within the joint capsule as the Chiropractor takes your joint to its end range. Please discuss any fears with your Chiropractor as we are able to use a variety of techniques including the McTimoney Technique which is a very gentle approach.
